    Step 6: Melissa.

In my opinion, this particular performance was the highlight of the evening. I wanted to share it to show the impact and strength of traditional texts like Corinda's 13 Steps to Mentalism. I loved the participant's response to this piece, and it actually got significantly deeper as the camera went off. There's a very interesting connection built between a mentalist and a participant that isn't always prevalent in the performance of other areas in magic.

With that, I understand that this is far from a solid performance at all. With only a couple years under my belt, I'm still relatively new to mentalism, and I'm still exploring the techniques and getting familiar with their execution. After reading Luke Jermay's and Peter Turner's work, I understand there were several missed opportunities throughout this piece that I wish I had the courage to take advantage of.

In the end, my biggest self criticism of this performance was my lack of awareness to how guarded both she and I were to one another in terms of body language. If I had it to do all over again, I would have attempted to build more non-verbal rapport with her and ask that uncross her arms for me. Likewise, I would have done something else with my own hands besides the weird "handwashing prayer" (?) I was unconsciously doing. Again, this is a valuable lesson learned from self analysis of filming live performances. I hope others continue this trend for others to learn as well.

Despite its shortcomings, I'm relatively proud of this performance. I think a genuine connection was built at its climax.

I'd love to hear what others have to say.

I agree - you both had a good connection by the time the reveal was done.

You come off as a normal, friendly guy with a unique ability that you enjoy sharing with people. I'm not sure if that's the character you go after, but it seems to fit you well.

I really enjoyed the performance. I agree with you that it would have been nice to open the body language up. But, overall this looked like a genuine feat of mind reading. Well done!

This is nice! You are right about the body language, but this was a really strong effect, impromptu and with no props, so "props" to you. Regarding the body language, I think it is normal for people to be a bit guarded when you are trying to get inside their head, but one thing that may help: Rather than asking her to uncross her arms, just grab one of her hands and put it on your forehead, or ask her to "hold up the invisible marker board." This will of course force her to uncross her harms, without you necessarily explicitly saying to do so.
    I am, therefore...
