Forum Rules (Updated on June 24, 2008)

    ..::Forum Rules::..

    Welcome to the Ellusionist.com forums!

There are a variety of topics and discussions going on, and a great number of magicians of all skill levels available to guide one another through their magical journey.

To make sure things do not get out of hand, please review the following list of rules and understand them. If a forum rule is broken, our Moderators will make a judgment call based on a variety of factors to ensure that the rules are enforced appropriately.

For your convenience, each rule is listed in a separate post so that you can quickly and easily find the information you need. Please click on the topic of your choice to learn more information about that topic.

We reserve the rights to make changes to the forum rules at any time. Please check the rules regularly.

    Exposure

Exposure is not allowed. Any post containing exposure will be edited or deleted. This will include exposure of any magic trick or effect, prop (gimmick, gaff, cameras, stooges, etc), as well as flourishes and XCM.

Moderators will make a judgment call based on each individual post at hand as to whether the post will be edited or deleted. Further action may be required based on the seriousness of the offense and past history with the individual user.

    Thanks!

    Teaching

Teaching is not allowed. Any post that contains teaching will be edited or deleted. This will include the teaching of any magic trick or effect, prop (gimmick, gaff, cameras, stooges, etc), as well as flourishes and XCM.

Note: Teaching is slightly different than exposure. Teaching does not require, but may include exposure, and vice versa.

Moderators will make a judgment call based on each individual post at hand as to whether the post will be edited or deleted. Further action may be required based on the seriousness of the offense and past history with the individual user.

    Thanks!

    Bumping Threads

Thread bumping is not allowed. Any post with the clear intentions of bumping a thread will be deleted.

Bumping a thread simply means to post in the thread to bring it to the top.

    Thanks!

    Clutter

Threads that clutter the forums will be deleted.

There are a variety of threads that are considered 'clutter' so it would be impossible to list them all. Any thread that has no point, shows clear signs of laziness or does not further improve the quality of the forums may be considered clutter. You will find some examples below for some popular threads that will be deleted.
    Threads offering assistance/answers.
Here are 3 specific questions that would fall under this category:
    1. I am here to assist you with all things related to . . . product.
    2. Please feel free to post all of your . . . product questions in this thread so that they can be easier to find.
    3. I have experience and knowledge with . . . magic. Please let me know if you have any questions for me about that field and I'll be happy to answer them.
The point of the forums is to assist and answer questions with one another; there is no point in creating a thread for that same purpose. If you want to answer questions about a specific topic, wait for that question to come up and then answer it when it does.
Threads requesting ideas for what to purchase next.
If you need information about products you are considering, you should do the research on that specific product. Check out the product page, Review and Pre-Purchase forums, and ask questions about a specific product. You are the only one who can decide which item is better for you.
Requesting updates on activities in the forums or website.
A quick browse of the forums or website will show you what has been updated and what has not. There is no point in requesting this information for others to do the work for you.
    Threads requesting/requiring a PM response.
There should be no need to start a thread that requests or requires a PM response. If the topic may lead to exposure, send a PM to a Moderator and he will be happy to assist you further. If you have a store related issue, submit an eSupport Ticket for further assistance.
    Spoon Feeding.
These forums are not to spoon feed each other, but they are here to assist you in your magical journey. Only you should pick out the effects to be added to your routine, come up with patter ideas, research future purchases, etc. Everyone else is more than willing to 'assist' you on finding your own path, but they are not here to do the work for you.

Moderators will make a judgment call based on each individual post at hand as to whether the post will be edited or deleted. Further action may be required based on the seriousness of the offense and past history with the individual user.

    Thanks!

    Requests for Contact Information

Public requests for another user's contact information is not allowed. Any thread or post that requests this information will be edited or deleted.

You may contact other members directly via PM to exchange contact information, but since our forums are open to the general public, this will not be allowed in the open forums. This is for your own protection as well as the protection of everyone else who visits these forums.

    Thanks!

    Disrespect

Disrespect is not allowed. Any post that shows disrespect toward a person, company, or an item/idea/method will be deleted.

Moderators will make a judgment call based on each individual post at hand as to whether the post will be edited or deleted. Further action may be required based on the seriousness of the offense and past history with the individual user.

    Forum Passwords

Requesting or sharing forum passwords is not allowed. Any post requesting or sharing forum passwords will be edited or deleted.

Password protected forums are protected for a specific reason. Access can only be gained to these forums with a purchase of that product directly from Ellusionist.com and not from other store locations.

If you have not received the forum passwords for items purchased from Ellusionist.com then you have 2 options to receive those passwords.
    1. Visit My Account from the main website and check out your order history.
    2. Submit an eSupport Ticket using the same email address you used on your order.
Moderators will make a judgment call based on each individual post at hand as to whether the post will be edited or deleted. Further action may be required based on the seriousness of the offense and past history with the individual user.

    Thanks!

    Other Websites

You may, from time to time, come across various other websites regarding magic. Some websites will sell magic, some will hurt magic. We have a good understanding of things that are happening all over the net.

    Password Protected Websites

Sharing passwords, hints, answers, etc. to password protected websites is not allowed.

    Banned Websites

While many major magic stores and websites are allowed in discussion, there are a select few that have been banned from discussion. Due to the very nature of it, we cannot provide you with a list of banned websites. If you happen to mention a website and it has been **** out then you'll know it is not allowed.

Moderators will make a judgment call based on each individual post at hand as to whether the post will be edited or deleted. Further action may be required based on the seriousness of the offense and past history with the individual user.

    Thanks!

    Rule Enforcement

Any thread or post that tries to enforce the forum rules will be deleted. This includes any comment toward a violation of the forum rules.

If you run across a thread or post that is in violation, please send a report. This will notify all Moderators and Administrators of the forums and allow them to take appropriate action as quickly as possible.

    Reporting a Post
    1. Click on the little red triangle next to the post in violation. It is on the left side of the post near the bottom of the post.
      It looks like this:
    2. Fill out the required field under 'Message' with brief description of why you feel this post is in violation. For example: Internet slang.
    3. Click on 'Send Report' located under the 'Message' field.
Moderators will make a judgment call based on each individual post at hand as to whether the post will be edited or deleted. Further action may be required based on the seriousness of the offense and past history with the individual user.

    Thanks!

    Rants

Ranting on the forums can be risky. Moderators will use their judgment when dealing with threads that ‘rant' or ‘vent’ as their sole purpose. As some rants have the potential to spark a powerful debate, there is no telling whether or not a thread will remain open.

Here are a few guidelines to consider before ranting on these forums:
    • Timing: Timing is crucial. If something has happened 6 months ago, there is usually no need to bring it back up now.
    • Duplicates: Are there similar topics on the matter at hand? The chances of your thread being closed are much stronger if the same topic is being discussed in another thread.
    • Beneficial: Does your discussion benefit anyone? The chances of your thread remaining open are slim if your thread does not educate or stimulate the mind.
These guidelines are unfortunately not set in stone, but they should help you to understand what is going on concerning rants.

Moderators will make a judgment call based on each individual post at hand as to whether the post will remain open or be closed or deleted. Further action may be required based on multiple conditions with the thread at hand and the individual user.

    Thanks!

    Search Feature

There is a Search Feature that is specifically designed to search through the many topics in our forums. You may run a basic search or a more advanced search.

    Using the Search Feature

The search option at the very top of the page is to run a search in the Ellusionist.com store and website. The search option for the forums is located under that within a separate navigation bar. Click on the Search button to run a basic or advanced search, fill out the required fields, and then run your search.

Using the Search Feature is an option and is not required. There are sites dedicated to running searches found on the internet, such as Google, Yahoo, etc. These are discussion forums, so you also have the option of posting or creating a new thread for your topic.

    Suggesting the Search Feature

Suggesting the Search Feature can come across as rude, lazy and selfish. There are a variety of reasons that users do not or have not ran a search.
    • If you have nothing other to say than 'run a search' then your post will be deleted.
    • If your post comes off as rude in any way when suggesting the search feature, then your post will be edited or deleted.
To put it simply, if you cannot answer a question or reply to a topic without relying on the search feature as backup, then you may want to consider not posting at all. I do not want to see the word 'search' in every post - I want to see members helping one another and discussing.

Moderators will make a judgment call based on each individual post at hand as to whether the post will be edited or deleted. Further action may be required based on the seriousness of the offense and past history with the individual user.

    Thanks!
