    Starting with rope magic

    Hi there....
I wanted to start with rope magic now, because only cards are boring. But should I get to learn it? There are many Books or DVDs. I justed wanted to do a cut and restore routine....move knots in the rope...you know...

There's lots of sources for learning rope magic. Two that I'd recommend are the book Abbott's Encyclopedia of Rope Magic and the DVD set Daryl's Expert Rope Magic. Both will give you a good background on knots, sleights, and routines.

If you just want to learn one great rope routine, Richard Sanders' "Fiber Optics" is a good one to pick up.

If you're just starting out in rope magic I'd recommend learning the basics before trying the more advanced routines. With the bare basics you can put together a very entertaining cut and restored routine.

For example, I did a show today in which I had "trouble" with the rope staying cut. The first 2 times I cut the rope, it "restored" itself. It wasn't until the third cut that I was able to make the rope stay "apart" long enough to "restore" it. The audience loved it. :)

I used 2 different methods of "cutting" the rope. And 3 different methods to "restore" it. Having the knowledge of several methods can make for a very entertaining routine. And can give you the experience to make the longer, more complex routine easier to master. That's just my opinion.

So what teaches the basics? Daryl's expert rope magic is not just one DVD, is it?

The Daryl rope DVDs are a 3 volume set.

Volume 1: Learning the Ropes covers Basic, Desolving, and Florish Knots and Cut & Restored Rope.

Volume 2: Stringing You Along covers Multiple Knots, Rope thru Body Parts, Ring and Rope, and more.

Volume 3: The Great White Rope is more advanced moves and 2 of Daryl's rope routines.

This is just a quick overview of what's on the DVDs. They're produced by L&L Publishing and the link for the page is:

You should be able to find these at almost any magic store or site. Hope this info helps.
