The Raven - A Formal Review

    http://www.ellusionist.com/order/images/raven-demo.jpg
    The Raven Visual Coin Vanish
Produced by Chuck Leach of Chazpro

In 1996, Chuck Leach created one of the most unique pieces of apparatus in the magic community. His apparent creativity devised an amazing utility device that enabled a magician of any experience or age appear to be a mysterious god. His invention of the Raven Visual Coin Vanish received critical acclaim throughout severla magic conventions across the entire nation. The sense of impossibility surrounding its working made way for amateur magician David Blaine to use it on his national television debut, Street Magic. It is by far one of the most clean, visual vanishes of a small object any magician can ask for.

In effect, a marked coin is examined by the audience, and placed upon the back of a spectator's hand. The magician, after displaying both sides of his hands to be clearly empty, waves his palms over the coin, and without even giving the spectator the slightest touch, the quarter instantly vanishes into thin air.

On the Raven's companion video, Chuck Leach also provides valuable insight as to caring for the clever gimmick, and gives additional effects, flourishing the versatility of the overall gaff. Leach teaches how to vanish and change nearly any small object. He vanishes cigarettes, dollar bills, finger rings and other things. He's able to change a coin into a selected card. Under the same impossible circumstances, he shows how to change, shrink, morph, and vanish foreign coins. Offering over 20 close-up illusions and usages for the Raven, Chuck Leach holds nothing back on the video. He's instructs how to use it while wearing a short-sleeved shirt or button down jacket. Overall, the video promises the best out of the Raven and delivers it to the customer.

The Raven may require a good deal of practice time prior to performing with it in the real world. The original Raven kit comes with everything a performer needs to use this device straight out of the package-- including a sheet of professionally printed, illustrated instructions. This is a quality product.

Although the Raven initially sold for $45.00 when it first arrived on the market, Ellusionist is currently selling the item for a drastically low price-- it's definitely a steal. For only a little more than $20.00, this close-up miracle can be in any aspiring magician's arsenal. Brad Christian, the founder of Ellusionist, has taken the Raven into his line of top-notch quality magic, and put his personal stamp of approval on its workings. From a scale 1-10, I would rate this product a solid nine. It's well-made, commercial magic that creates reputations. The only flaw in its methods is that it unfortunately does not permit the usage of borrowed objects. It's still an awesome effect, and I highly recommend it to anyone of beginning or intermediate level background.

    Awesome work.
    Ray.

That was a very good review. Although, to the spectators, it appears as though you use a borrowed coin. I love The Raven. I used it often, but then they revealed the secret on the exposure Street Magic show. Now, if you perform it, it might be good, but there is a big chance that they will know how it is done. I congratulate Chuck Leach on his creative mind, and I congratulate RT on the great review.

Thanks RT for the review. I have the RAVEN and I really love it. The flaw is the "coin". I use a special coin from my country (Argentina) but, when I do the trick, I show 4 or 5 coins and say "ok, pick a coin... let's see... this one?" and that's it !!!

Chuck Leach: you've made it man !!! Thanks !

    Review of The Raven Package.

Seeing the effects the Raven on the street prior to purchase, I still had no clue as to how it worked. I knew the main principle, but yet, had no clue as to setting it up.

I ordered my Raven package from Ellusionist alittle more than a week ago, and recieved it FAST. I recieved the Shapeshifter download first of course. The quality was typical, great, ellusionst quality. The tick itself, although quite hard is a killer, and is one of the best visible tricks that I now have in my aresenal. This was deffinately worth it.

The Raven gimmick itself was smaller than I expected. I immediately began toying with it,. and read the directions on how to strap on this bad boy (sorry, couldn't resist).

In action, I can say the Raven does take some getting used to. It's not a first try trick. After a few hours you should have a basic idea of achieving a good vanish, etc. I rushed things a bit and took mine out last night after recieving it because there was a big party going on, and trust me, people think my tricks are that much more amazing when there hammered.. I knew what I was getting myself into, but took the chance anyways.

My first victim never saw it coming, and when I vanished the included nickel off his hand, he went insane, and just kind of stared at his hand and shook his head. After numerous people, I showed my best friend, and it figures, he's the one that I screw things up on, luckily, it was ok, because he's the one that video tapes me doing tricks on the street anyways, and I usually have to let him in on alot so he can get a good camera angle.

All in all the Raven is highly recommended by me. For the small price, you'll get the biggest reactions you can imagine. I can't wait until my Raven video gets here, so that I can learn all that this thing has to offer.

The raven is a very valuable thing to have. The M5 can also do that plus alot more. The raven does leave you cleaner after the vanish but the M5 provides alot more. I own them both and I use and love both of them. It is especially great because I live in Canada every coin is magnetic except for the pennie. Toonies, Loonies, Quarters, Dimes, and Nickels. It is alot easier having magnetic coins because no switch has to be made.

also, I think that Euro work with the raven too, so there doesn't need to be a switch. If they work then I can't wait until summer when I go to greece. I will do it to everyone.

I've also heard that, for all those people in the UK our 1p and 2p coins work, even thought there called Coppers. However i don't own the raven yet but i've heard they do work.

    Coins

So you are saying that to do this trick most effective, that one has to purchase the different special coins to perform this trick the best way it can?

Not really. Seeing that you live in the US, it should be fine that you use the nickel. What you get in the package is a nickel, a smaller nickel, the "brake" and fishing line, and of course, The Raven.
With this stuff alone, you can do most of the things shown in the Raven demo at Magicsmith.com. Anything else you need, you can find around at home, or a trip to a local hardware store.
There are many uses for 12-gauge piano wire. One of them is to string the piano.

its not a good idea to tell them about the break.

that might expose it a bit if they understand what it means

Oh yeah Mark, canadian Nickels AREN'T magnetic. I don't know why. I tried it with my Raven and it didn't work.

well are Australian coins magnetic? take every single different aus coin and stick it to a magnet and see if its attracted or not.

If they aren't magnetic, then sorry, I can't help you.

    For all you canadians...

So there I am performing a coin change Nickel to Penny for a friend. I took out the nickel that comes with the Raven, and a canadian penny randomly from my pocket, set it up on his hand and wave my hand. ...

Nothing left in his hand. After a few minutes when I made my getaway I found out something amazing. Some pennies are magnetic. Specifially the one where the date says 1952-2002. So what I did is I raided each room in my house and found all those change containers we all have. Separated the pennies and used the Raven to separate magnetic ones. I found about 5 in about 200 coins. They were all the same date. 1952-2002. Also I found a dime that is non-magnetic (again cdn coin) The date on that is 1968. I only found one. I hope this helps you guys out. I know I shut up the wise mouth who always says you're using a magnet somehow...

I highly reccomend the Raven package.

I own the Raven and the M5 and i recommend both because of the way they compliment each other.

    on a scale of 1-10 I give the Raven a 10
